Debris Flow

A debris flow occurs when the solidified debris and soil material on the steep slopes become heavily saturated with water and set in motion. Debris flows are always triggered by heavy and prolonged rains, snow and melting ice.

On its way down, the debris flow usually sweeps additional material, so that within a short time it becomes a mixture of water, mud, sand, load carrying rocks and tree trunks. This mudslide has significantly more destructive power than an avalanche or flood and is therefore causing greater harm.
