Protection systems against natural desasters caused by snow

An avalanche mostly is defined as masses of loose snow or ice sliding or rushing downhill. We distinguish different kinds of avalanches depending on their movement: slab avalanche, loose snow avalanche, powder avalanche and ice avalanche. The causes for the formation of an avalanche depend on several factors as depth of snow, gradient, temperature, structure of the snow, hillside situation, snow hardness and the ground cover.

Avalanche research uses computer simulation to scientifically investigate the formation and movement of avalanches. The Alpine countries, the USA, Canada and Japan invest a lot of time and effort in order to protect the population against avalanches.

The formation of avalanches in the fissure area must be avoided by active measures. Different requirements need different avalanche protection systems.
